During a bullfight, a drunk suddenly wandered into the middle of the ring. The crowd
began to shout, but the drunk was unaware of the danger.
在一次斗牛时,一个醉汉突然溜达到斗牛场中间,人们开始大叫起来,但醉汉
却没有意识到危险。
The bull was busy with the matador at the time, but it suddenly caught sight of the
drunk who was shouting rude remarks and waving a red cap.
当时那公牛正忙于对付斗牛士,但突然它看见了醉汉,只见他正大声说着粗鲁
的 话,手里挥动着一顶红帽子。
Apparently sensitive to criticism, the bull forgot all about the matador and charged at
the drunk.
对挑衅显然非常敏感的公牛完全撇开斗牛士,直奔醉汉而来。
The crowd suddenly grew quiet. The drunk, however, seemed quite sure of himself.
观众突然静了下来,可这醉汉像是很有把握似的。
When the bull got close to him, he clumsily stepped aside to let it pass. The crowd
broke into cheers and the drunk bowed.
当公牛逼近他时,他踉跄地住旁边一闪,牛扑空了。观众欢呼起来,醉汉向人
们鞠躬致谢。
By this time, however, three men had come into the ring and they quickly dragged the
drunk to safety.
然而,此时已有3个人进入斗牛场,迅速把醉汉拉到安全的地方。
Even the bull seemed to feel sorry for him, for it looked on sympathetically until the
drunk was out of the way before once more turning its attention to the matador.
好像连牛也在为他感到遗憾,因为它一直同情地看着醉汉,直到他的背影消
逝,才重新将注意力转向斗牛士。

Answer: A drunk suddenly wandered into the middle of the ring during a

matador, the bull charged at the drunk, but he stepped aside to let it pass. The
crowd cheered and the drunk bowed. Just after this, three men dragged the
drunk to safety while the bull looked on sympathetically before it once more
turned its attention to the matador.

倒装
有时为了语法和修辞上的需要,将谓语置于主语之前,这样的语序被称为倒装语
序。倒装语序分为全部倒装,即将整个谓语置于主语之前;部分倒装,即只将
谓语的一部分(通常是助动词和情态动词)置于主语之前。此外,有时句子的语
序没有变,但句子的某一成分通常是宾语、表语和状语移至句首。这种情况被称
为前置。
• Below the valley stands a large hydraulic power station.
在山谷的下面矗立着一座大型水电站。(全部倒装)
• Never shall I forget the day when my first daughter was born.
我永远不会忘记我第一个女儿出生的那一天。(部分倒装)
根据使用的目的,倒装分两种情况:
(1)语法倒装:由于语法结构的需要而必须进行的倒装,否则就会出现语法错
误。
(2)修辞倒装:出于修辞的需要而把句子的正常语序变为倒装语序。
• 全部倒装
▪用在作为地点状语的介词短语的后面
• At the top of the hill stands a weather station. 小山顶上矗立着一个气象
站。
• Among the mountains lies an ancient temple with a long history.
在群山之中有一座具有悠久历史的古庙。
▪当用作表语的形容词和分词位于句首时
• Great and spacious and beautiful is our country.
我们的国家伟大、辽阔、美丽。
• Present at the interview was a young beautiful woman interpreter.
出席会见的有一位年轻貌美的女译员。
• Seated in a ring on the ground were a group of college students talking
heartily.
围成一圈坐在地上的是一群大学生,在尽情地交谈着。
▪当句首状语为方位词如here, there和时间副词如now, then等,谓语动词为be,
go, come等表示位置转移的动词而主语又较长时,通常用全部倒装。
• There comes the police car! 警车来啦!
• Here is the letter you’ve been looking forward to.你久盼的信在这儿。
• Then came the color television in the early1960’s.
后来于60年代初出现了彩色电视。
• Now is your turn to answer the question.现在轮到你回答问题。
注:如果主语是人称代词,主谓便不能倒装。
• Here we are at last.我们终于到了。
▪小品词如in, out, off, away, up, down等置于句首时。
• Down fell the pail, and the milk spilled all over the ground.
扑通一声,桶摔了下来,牛奶泼洒到地上。
▶ 部分倒装
部分倒装是指谓语的一部分,即助动词be, do, does, did, have, has, had以及情态
动词can, could, may, might, shall, will, should, would, ought等置于主语之前,其余
部分包括谓语动词仍在主语之后。
在下列情况下,通常要采用部分倒装。
▪句首状语为否定词或带有否定意义的词语时,要采用部分倒装。
• At no time and under no circumstances will China be the first to use nuclear
weapons.
不论何时也不论在什么情况下,中国都不会首先使用核武器。
• By no means do I agree with you on that point.
在这一点上,我决不同意你的意见。
• In no other city in the world are there such beautiful parks.
无论在世界上的任何其他城市,都没有如此美丽的公园。
▪句首状语若由only+副词,only+介词短语,或only+状语从句常用部分倒装
• Only yesterday did she find out that her watch was missing.
只是昨天她才发觉她的表丢了。
• Only by constant practice will you learn English well.
唯有通过不断的实践,你才会学好英语。
▪关联词so/such that开头的句子,往往引起部分倒装。
• So loudly did he speak that even the people in the next room could hear him.
他说话是那样的响亮,甚至连隔壁的人都能听得见。
• Such is his courage that he does not know the meaning of fear.
他是那样的勇敢,以至于他不懂害怕这个词的意思。
▪在 以 not only... but(also), hardly/scarcely/barely... when, no sooner... than, not
until等开头的句子,常用部分倒装。
• Not only did he complain about the food, but he also refused to pay for it.
他不仅抱怨食物,而且还拒绝付款。
• Not until late afternoon did she begin to tackle the problem.
直到下午很晚时,她才开始解决这个问题。
▪在as引导的方式状语从句,than引导的比较状语从句以及the more..., the
more...的结构中,也可以用部分倒装。
• The noisier the children (were), the more pleased was their mother.
孩子们闹得越厉害,他们的母亲就越是高兴。
• Silver conducts heat and electricity much better than do most metals in the
world.
银的导热导电性能比世界上大多数金属都要好得多。
