• Step 1: Listen and answer the question.

Question: Why was the first tunnel not completed?

Answer: Because the British were afraid of invasion through the tunnel.

• Step 2: Intensive reading.

In 1858, a French engineer, Tom, arrived in England with a plan for a twenty-one-

mile tunnel under the English Channel.

He said that it would be possible to build a platform in the centre of the Channel. This

platform would serve as a port and a railway station.

The tunnel would be well-ventilated if tall chimneys were built above sea level.

In 1860, a better plan was put forward by an Englishman, William.

He suggested that a double railway-tunnel should be built. This would solve the

problem of ventilation, for if a train entered this tunnel, it would draw in fresh air

behind it.

Forty-two years later a tunnel was actually begun. If, at the time, the British had not

feared invasion, it would have been completed.

The world had to wait almost another 100 years for the Channel Tunnel.

It was officially opened on March 7,1994, finally connecting Britain to the European

continent.

• Step 3: Listen again and answer the questions.

1Who planned to build a tunnel under the English Channel in 1858? How would it

be ventilated? (The tunnel, which…)

2 Who suggested a better plan two years later?

3 How would passing trains solve the problem of ventilation in his proposed double

railway-tunnel? (because they would)

4 Did work begin forty-two years later or not? Why was it stopped? (Though…

because)

5 When was the Channel Tunnel officially opened? (However)

Answer: The tunnel, which the French engineer, Tom, planned to build under

the English Channel in 1858, would be ventilated by tall chimneys built above

sea level. An Englishman, William, suggested a better plan two years later.

Passing trains would solve the problem of ventilation in his proposed double

railway-tunnel because they would draw in fresh air behind them. Though

work began forty-two years later, it was stopped because the British feared

invasion. However, the tunnel was officially opened on March 7, 1994.

• Exercise: Sentence structure and vocabulary.

• The number of deaths caused by car accidents is surprising every year.

• People do not know the value of health till they lose it.

know。

• Are the living more important than the dead?

• Either you or he is in the wrong.

• The quality of iron is hardness; the quality of sugar is sweetness.

• Collecting stamps is his hobby.

• To finish the work in so short a time now seems practically impossible.

• When we shall have our sports meet is still a problem.

• Two hours is the limit of this test.

• Three weeks was allowed for making the necessary preparations.

——“What do you need?”“你要什么?”

——“Five dollars is all I need.”

• There are two silver dollars in each of the stockings.

▪如果主语是由 all, most, half, none, some, plenty, the last, the rest, the remainder,

• All roads lead to Rome.

• All hope has gone.

• Half the car was damaged.

• Half the apples are bad.

• The rest are arriving later.

• Part of the house was burned in the fire.

• Part of the passengers were injured in the accident.

• None of the questions are difficult.

▪如果主语是由 form of, portion of, series of, species of, kind of 名词构成时,谓

• A series of pre-recorded tapes has been prepared for language laboratory use.

• The first portion of the book was marvellous.

• More than one car was burned in the riot.

一致的原则,谓语动词用单数形式; another, each one, each of 名词复数(或

代词), either, no one, neither, the other 作主语时,谓语动词也采取单数形

式。

• Either of the plans is equally dangerous.

• Either of them is satisfactory.

• Neither of them was any good.

• The accused was found guilty.

• The accused were tried and discharged.

• The impossible in the past is now possible.
