Jasper White is one of those rare people who believe in ancient myths.

贾斯珀·怀特是少有的相信古代神话的人之一。

He has just bought a new house in the city, but ever since he moved in, he has had

trouble with cars and their owners.

他刚在城里买下一所新房子,但自从搬进去后,就和汽车及车主们发生了磨

擦。

When he returns home at night, he always finds that someone has parked a car outside

his gate.

当他夜里回到家时,总是发现有人把车停在他家大门外。

Because of this, he has not been able to get his own car into his garage even once.

为此,他甚至一次也没能把自己的车开进车库。

Jasper has put up ‘No Parking’ signs outside his gate, but these have not had any

effect.

贾斯珀曾把几块“禁止停车”的牌子挂在大门外边,但没有任何效果。

Now he has put an ugly stone head over the gate. It is one of the ugliest faces I have

ever seen.

现在他把一个丑陋的石雕头像放在了大门上边,这是我见过的最丑陋的头像之

一。

I asked him what it was and he told me that it was Medusa, the Gorgon.

我问他那是什么?他告诉我那是蛇发女怪美杜莎。

Jasper hopes that she will turn cars and their owners to stone. But none of them has

been turned to stone yet!

贾斯珀希望她把汽车和车主们都变成石头。但到目前为止还没有一个变成石头

their cars outside his gate, so he has put up ‘No Parking’ signs but they have

not paid any attention to them. Now he has put an ugly stone head over his

gate. It is the head of Medusa, the Gorgon. He wants her to turn car owners to

stone but she has not done so yet.

副词的用法难点(下)

▶ 某些副词的用法比较

▪ already, yet, still的用法比较

already用于肯定句,yet用于否定句、疑问句和以 whether/if引导的宾语从句中。

• I wonder whether they have arrived yet.我不知道他们是否已经到了。

already, yet, still都可以用于疑问句,但表达的意思不同。

• Have you already seen the film?(期待对方作出肯定的回答)

• Have you seen the film yet?(只是让对方自己作出回答)

• Is your father here yet?你父亲来了吗?

• Is your father still here?你父亲没离开吗?

▪ 频率副词

用百分比表示频率副词的频率标度如下:

100% always

100% all the time

90% almost always

90% not always

80% generally, usually

60%~70% often, frequently, normally

50% constantly

50% as often as not

40% some of the time

20% sometimes, at times

10% occasionally, from time to time, not often

10% infrequently

5% rarely, seldom, hardly ever

0% never, at no time

▪ sometimes, sometime, some time的用法比较:

(1) sometimes有时,偶尔

• Sometimes I have succeeded, sometimes I have failed.

我有时成功了,有时我失败了。

(2)sometime作副词用与过去时或将来时连用,表示不知道或不明确规定的时

间;作形容词用表示“曾经,以前”。

• He will come back sometime.他日后某天会回来的。

• A sometime leader of the organization 该组织的一个前领导人

• Let’s get together sometime.让我们日后再相聚。

(3) some time是名词短语作状语,表示一段没有明确说明的时间。

• It will be some time before the work is finished.

这项工作将需要一段时间来完成。

• I will do it some time.过些时候我将做这件事。

▪ very和much的用法比较:

(1) very一般修饰形容词、副词、转化成形容词的现在分词和过去分词。

• I am very glad to see you.见到你很高兴

• He is very interested in science fiction.他对科幻小说很感兴趣。

• The news was very interesting.这则新闻很有趣。

(2)much用于作形容词的过去分词、形容词比较级或动词之前。

• His behavior was much criticized.他的行为遭到了很多批评。

• You must work much harder.你工作必须更加努力。

• I much appreciate your help.我非常感谢你的帮助。

在动词之后用 very much或 ever so much。

• Thank you ever so much/very much.

(3)very, quite常用于原形形容词之前,而much则不可。

• The film is very/quite good.这部电影很好看。

much常用于作前置定语的过去分词之前。

▪ a much discussed question一个时常讨论的问题

▪ altogether和 all together的用法比较

(1)altogether作“完全”或“总的来说”解

• I don’t altogether agree with you.我不完全同意你的意见。

• Altogether, the children have done very well.总的来说,孩子们做得很出

色。

(2)altogether, all together均可作“总共”解。

• They spent altogether/ all together about a year touring the four countries.

他们总共花了约一年的时间在这四个国家游览。

(3)all together还作“一道”“同时”解。

• Let’s sing all together.咱们一起唱吧。

▪ little, a bit, slightly, in the least在否定句中的不同含义:

• I don’t like her little.我十分喜欢她。

• I don’t like her a bit.我一点也不喜欢她。

• I didn’t praise him slightly.我大为称赞他。

• I didn’t praise him in the least.我毫不称赞他。

▪ rather和 fairly的用法比较:

rather, fairly作“相当地”“颇”解时,有时可以互换,含义没有什么不同;但有时含

义不同, fairly表示肯定,含有褒义,而 rather则表示否定,含有贬义。

• This is a fairly long film.

• This film is rather long.

• The soup is fairly hot.(说话者认为汤是热的,有爱喝热汤之意)

• The soup is rather hot.(含说话人嫌汤太烫,不宜喝之意)

rather常用于too或形容词、副词比较级前,而 fairly则不可。例如:

• This book is rather too difficult for me.

• She is rather better today.

• I did it rather better last time.

在下面句子里,只可用 rather而不用 fairly:

• I rather like him.我有几分喜欢他。

▪ hardly, scarcely和 barely的用法比较

• He had hardly/scarcely/barely enough money to buy a cup of coffee.

他几乎没有足够的钱买杯咖啡。

• Hardly/Scarcely/Barely had he arrived when he had to leave again.

他刚到达就又要离开。

但hardly和scarcely后面可以跟ever, any而barely则不可。

• At this time there was hardly/scarcely any noise from the street.

这时候几乎没有大街上传来的任何喧闹声。

• It hardly/scarcely ever snows in Florida.佛罗里达州几乎从不下雪。

▪ only too和 all too的法比较:

作“实在”解, only too和 all too可以互换使用。

• The holidays ended all/only too soon.假期结束得实在太快了。

注:① none too作“一点也不…”或“不太…”解。例如:

• We were none too early for the train.我们正好赶上火车。

• She did it none too well.她做得并不太好。

② only too还作“非常”解。例如:

• I am only too glad to see you here.能在这里见到你,我非常高兴。

▪ almost和 nearly的用法比较

(1)谈论较具体概念,如时间或空间进展,或可衡量或可比的事物时,almost,

nearly均可用,只是 almost要比nearly稍微接近些。

• She’s almost/nearly six feet tall.她差不多6英尺高。

• He nearly/almost fell off his bike.他差点从自行车上摔下来。

• He’s almost/ nearly as clever as you.他差不多和你一样聪明。

(2) almost可以和不易衡量的事物连用, nearly则不能。

• Our cat understands everything — he’s almost human.

我们的猫什么都懂——他几乎通人性。

• I almost think that you’re right.我几乎认为你是对的。

(3)nearly不可与never, nobody, no one, nothing, nowhere, no, none等连用,almost

可以和这些词连用,或者用 hardly加否定词代替之。例如:

almost never hardly ever

almost nobody hardly anybody

almost no money hardly any money
