After I had had lunch at a village pub, I looked for my bag. I had left it on a chair

beside the door and now it wasn’t there! As I was looking for it, the landlord came in.

我在一家乡村小酒馆吃过午饭后,就在找我的手提包。我之前把它放在门边的

椅子上,可这会儿不见了!当我正在寻找时,店主走了进来。

‘Did you have a good meal?’ he asked.

“您吃得好吗?”他问。

‘Yes, thank you,’ I answered, ‘but I can’t pay the bill. I haven’t got my bag.’

“很好,谢谢。”我回答,“但我付不了账,我的手提包没有了。”

The landlord smiled and immediately went out. In a few minutes he returned with my

bag and gave it back to me.

店主笑了笑,马上走了出去。一会儿工夫他拿着我的手提包回来了,把它还给

了我。

‘I’m very sorry,’ he said. ‘My dog had taken it into the garden. He often does this!’

“实在抱歉,”他说,“我的狗把它弄到花园里去了,他常干这种事!”

第二十单元 【语法点拨】

常用的表示地点的介词

▪ at, in, on, to

1 at表示在小地方,表示“在……附近,在……旁边”。对于市、镇,

既可以用at,也可以用in。

• He works at Haidian.他在海淀区工作

• She has been living in Haidian for ten years.10年来她一直住在海淀

区。

用at仅仅把海淀区看作地图上一个地点,不管其内部情况怎样;用in则把海

淀看作具有一定幅员的具体城镇,居住在其中哪条街道、哪个建筑物、在概念

上比较具体。对于大城市和大城市的街区,通常用in,如 in Beijing, in Haidian

District(海淀区)。但是,当把大城市仅仅看作地图上一点时,就可以用at。

• They stopped first at Shanghai, then at Tokyo on their way to San

Francisco.

他们在去旧金山途中先在上海逗留,然后在东京停留。

同样, arrive at指到达一个小地方, arrive in则指到达一个大地方。

• We arrived at the mountain village late in the afternoon.

我们于下午晚些时候到达那个山村。

• He arrived in Shanghai at three o’clock in the afternoon.

他于下午3点到达上海。

◆ 对于一个建筑物或一组建筑物既可用at,也可用in。用at是仅把它看作一个

机关,用in则是把它看作具体的建筑物。

• She works at the post office.她在邮局工作。

• In the rain she was sheltering in the post office.她当时在邮局躲雨。

②on表示“在……上面”,毗邻、接壤。

• There were lots of books on his desk.他书桌上有许多书。

• It is a beautiful mountain town on the river.这是一个美丽的临河山

镇。

• Qingdao is a beautiful city on the coast of the Yellow Sea.

青岛是黄海之滨的一座美丽城市。

3 to表示“在……范围外”,不强调是否接壤;也可表示“到……”

• Japan lies to the east of China.日本位于中国的东方。

• Nanjing is to the west of Shanghai.南京在上海以西。

• It is about 200 kilometers to Huangshan from here.

从这里到黄山约200公里。

▪ above, over, on

1 above指“在……上方”,不强调是否垂直,与 below相对。

• The bird was flying above my head.那鸟在我头顶上空飞翔。

• We were flying above the clouds.我们在云层上飞行。

• There is a slogan above the blackboard in the classroom.

教室黑板上方有一条标语。

2 over“在……之上”,指垂直的上方,与 under相对。但over与物体有一定

的空间,不直接接触。

• There is a bridge over the river.这河上有一座桥。

• There is a big lamp hanging over the table.桌子上方悬挂着一盏大灯。

③on“在……之上”,表示在某物体上面并与之接触。

• He put his watch on the desk.他把表放在书桌上。

• He stood on the clifftop looking out to the sea.他站在悬崖顶上眺望大

海。

▪ under, below

1 under表示“在……正下方”。

• There is a dog under the table.桌下有一条狗。

• She sat in the shade under the tree.她坐在树阴下。

2 below表示“在……下方”,不一定在正下方。

• Please write your name below the line.请在这行下面写你的名字。

▪ in front of, in the front of

1 in front of在……前面,反义词是 behind(在……的后面)。

• A policeman on horseback rode in front of the procession.

坐在马背上的一名警察在游行队伍的前面。

2 in the front of= in the front part of,意思是“在……的前部”,其反义词是

at the back of(在……的后部)。

• There is a blackboard in the front of our classroom.

我们的教室前面有一块黑板。

比较:

• There was a large hole in front of the building.大楼的前面有一个大

坑。

• There was a large hole in the front of the building.大楼的前部有一个大

坑。

▪ after, behind

1 after在……后面,表示地点时强调顺序的先后。

• Please line up one after another.请按顺序排队。

• The student sat after me.那个学生坐在我后面。

2 behind在……后面,表示地点时侧重方向和位置的前后关系。

• The student sat behind me.那学生坐在我背后。

• A young man and a young woman were sitting behind me.

一个青年男子和一个青年女子坐在我的后面。

• He hangs his coat on a nail behind the door.

他把外套挂在门后的一颗钉子上。
