情态动词 must, ought to 的用法
▪ must, ought to和 have to的区别:
a. You ought to obey your teachers.
b. You must obey your teachers.
c. You have to obey your teachers.
a句表示说话者要听话者注意自己有服从教师的义务,不含强迫之意。
b句表示说话者要听话者必须服从教师,含有主观强制之意。
c句表示按照规章制度,听话者有服从教师的义务,含有外界强制之意
▪ must和have to在过去时句中的用法:
在过去时的句子中,必须用 had to,不可用must;在间接引语中可以用must
• She had to leave at six yesterday afternoon.
她昨天下午六点必须离开。
• He said that he must leave at five that afternoon.
他说他那天下午五点必须离开。
▪ must问句的肯定和否定回答:
A: Must I go?
B: Yes, you must/ have to /have got to.
No, you needn’t. (一般不用 mustn’t)
No, you don’t need to.
No, you don’t have to.
▪ 表示一种与说话人愿望相反、不耐烦的感情色彩,意为“偏偏,非要”。
• Why must you always bother me?
为什么你总是来烦我?
▪ must+一般时:
表示推定或较大的可能(仅用于肯定句),其反义词是cannot或can’t,而不能用
mustn’t。
• She isn’t here. She must be in the library.
她不在这儿。她一定在图书馆里
▪ must+进行时:
表示对正在进行的事情的一种较肯定的推测,其反义词也是cannot或can’t
• She must be watching TV at home now.
她现在一定在家看电视。
▪ must+完成时:
表示对过去发生的事情的肯定推测,其否定式也是 cannot或can’t.
• You must have left your umbrella in the theater yesterday.
你昨天肯定把自己的伞忘在剧场里了。
• She can’t have been to your home. She doesn’t know your address.
她不可能去过你家。她不知道你的地址。
▪ ought to:
(1)“ought to+一般时”除了表示责任、义务外,还表示猜想,其否定式为ought
not
to或 oughtn’t to。
• You ought to be hungry now.你现在大概饿了吧。
• This oughtn’t to cause any problem.这大概不会引起什么麻烦吧。
• She ought to be here very soon.她可能很快就到这儿来。
(2)“ought to+完成时”表示过去应该做的事没有做到,其否定式则表示不需要做
的事竟然做到了。
• You ought to have come earlier.你本应该早来一点嘛。
• You oughtn’t to have turned down her kind invitation.
你不应该拒绝她的盛情邀请。
(3)ought to属正式用语, ought to语气比should略强, should较常用。ought to在美国
英语中用的很少,而should却相当常用。
(4)在美国英语中,ought to do用于否定句和疑问句时,to可以省略。
• Ought you smoke so much? 你应该抽这么多烟吗?
• You oughtn’t smoke so much.你不该抽这么多烟。
