• If it had rained last night, the ground would be wet now.

• If the weather had been more favorable last winter, the crops would be

growing still better.

• If she had taken the doctor’s advice, she might still be alive.

• If I were you, I would have accepted their terms.

有时只有主句,不出现虚拟条件句,而是用 without, with, but except for(要不是)

等介词短语,或者用but, or, or else, otherwise等副词或连词,或者用动词不定式

• But for (= If it had not been for) the storm, we should have arrived much

earlier.

• She would leave her husband except for (=if it were not for) the child.

• We couldn’t have finished it without Mary (=if it had not been for Mary).

• I would have done the same in that position. (= if I had been in that position)

• To hear him talk (= If you could hear him talk), you’d think he was the Prime

Minister.

• To have studied harder(=If you had studied harder), you would have passed

the examination.

• Born in better times, he would have been a scholar.

(If he had been born in better times, he would…)

• Given more time, I could have done it better.

( If I had been given more time, I could…)

• Failing this time again, what would you do?

(If you failed this time again, what would…)

• Walking alone in the dark, Mary would be terrified.

( If Mary walked alone in the dark, she…)

• A few minutes earlier (If you had come a few minutes earlier, you...), and

you would have seen the film star.

• I didn’t know that he was a cheat, or else (=if I had known he was a cheat)

I wouldn’t have believed him.

• I would write to her, but I don’t know her address. (=If I knew her address, I

would write to her. But…)

• I’m really very busy, otherwise(= if I were not so busy) I would certainly go

there with you.

• Anyone who had seen that painting (=If anyone had seen that painting, he…)

might have taken it for a photo.

• Any person who had behaved in that way (=If any person had behaved in that

way, he…,) would have been dismissed.

not poor) I am poor.

• You might stay here forever. ( =If you wanted to, you might..)
